Physics Tuition - Play video game to do well in studies!!

Play video games to do well in studies!!?? Sounds too good to be true? The title of the post seems to encourage students to play more video games to help them in their studies. Don't get me wrong. This is not my intention. What I meant to say is that we can learn a lot from video games and playing them occasionally is alright.

I am sure most of you (parent and students included) play video games. Many of you should have experience getting hooked on playing Candy crush (myself included) or any other games. You just have to get to the next stage and beat the next highest score. Have you ever wondered why are we so interested in playing and challenging video games levels but not so when it comes to studying?

If you had noticed how video games are designed, they usually starts from an easy level and moving progressively to more and more challenging levels. This is intentional. The reason is to give players a taste of success so that players will continue to play the games. This is the key to motivation!

Imagine playing a game where you couldn't get past level 1 after numerous tries. Would you still continue? I doubt so. Most likely you will give up and blame it on the design of the game or your skills in playing the game. This is the same as studying. If you have never passed any Physics test before, you will just blame it on Physics being too difficult or blame yourself for not being smart enough and give up on the subject and no amount of Physics Tuition can help.

In order to give students the motivation to continue challenging a game level or a difficult physics questions, the must have a taste of success first. Start with the easy level! Show them that they can do it. Starts with the basic and eventually they will be motivated to challenge more difficult levels and questions.

Physics Tuition - Khan Academy physics lessons online

After a very long while.... finally another posting....
i am here to share with you guys on a very good website called Khan Academy

This site feature videos lessons on various topics including maths and physics. I must say the videos are pretty good and broken down to easy to understand bite size. It is a very good resources to better your understanding on any topics your are not confident with. It is also a very good resources to supplement your Math or Physics tuition. However do take note that the topics are not organized according to the Singapore syllabus and you will have to select the correct topics to learn.

They also have practice exercises that you can do although the units used may not be SI units. Have fun revising and good luck for mid year examination!

Physics Tuition - Key To Success

Physics Tuition - How to not forget!

I am sure many students out there always face the difficulty of having to memories facts for different subjects such as different laws and theories for Physics. I am going to introduce a powerful technique to help you guys out there to strengthen your memory and make remembering those facts easier.

Many students are still using what i call 'brute' technique for memorizing. An example is repeatedly reading the same thing for a few times and just cramp it in to your brain. This is not the most effective way of memorizing. In fact memorizing is more effective using creativity.

What do i mean by using creativity? Well here is an example. Imagine this story with me...
There is a long and heavy snake moving very fast towards a candle. Suddenly a lighting strike on the candle and lit it up. The surrounding suddenly become warm and the candle started dripping wax on the snake face making it look like a mole.

Now try to recall the story again. Can you remember it? If you can, you have just memorised the 7 SI units.
In that story above, "There is a long (Length) and heavy (Weight) snake moving very fast (Time) towards a candle (Candela). Suddenly a lighting (Ampere) strike on the candle and lit it up. The surrounding suddenly become warm (Kelvin) and the candle started dripping wax on the snake face making it look like a mole (Mole).

Well this is just an example. I am sure you can think of more interesting stories with vivid visual image to help you remember those stuff you want to remember.Try it on some of the Physics theories you want to memories and enjoy while doing it!

End of examinations!!

Its the time of the year again... the time where the examinations ended and the holiday begin!!!

This is the time where most of the students take a deserving break after working so hard for the end of year examinations. Some of my Physics Tuition students are going overseas with friends or family for a good holiday tour. Besides taking a break from studies, there are many holiday supplementary courses out there to help those of you who think you didn't do well this time round. There are also many others workshops on many different learning aspect to enrich your learning experiences

I know of a company, EdValue, who are actively organising talks, workshops and seminars for students as well as parents to add value to the kids learning. They are also the organizer of the Singapore Education Summit last and this year. Recently they are organizing a Creative Writing workshop for kids. If you are interested, click on the image below for details.

Well regardless of what you do during this holiday, make sure you enjoy and make the most of it. Don't end this month long break feeling like you have wasted another month of your youth.

In commeration of Steve Jobs

In commemoration of Steve Jobs.... The passing of a visionary who made a difference in the way we live.
Here's an inspiring speech given by him in 2005 during Stanford's commencement ceremony.

One of the important message i had from his message is never be too afraid to make mistake. Even Steve have made some mistake in his life.....

Just like what i always tell my Physics Tuition students. Don't be afraid of any subjects just because you are not doing well and is always getting things wrong. Most of the time, it's always through mistake that you learn the most and remember it the best.......

Physic Tuition - Work Energy Power - 1 (MCQ)

Question

Solution
D - This question is a bit tricky. The amount of kinetic energy in this case depends on the energy given to the 3 blocks (F x D) and hence all the 3 blocks have the same kinetic energy.

3 tips to Study SMART not HARD

Exams are round the corner and I am sure most of you are studying hard and preparing for them. Before you dive right into studying, I would like to share with you some tips on how to study smart and not hard. In this article, I’m going to write about 3 ways that you can make use of to study smarter and not harder.
First tip, know the optimum study duration. Well I would say that you are very hard working if you study 8 hours a day. However are you studying smart? Are those 8 hours spent on the books effective or are you just staring at the notes? Let me share with you some research on optimum study duration. Research has shown that the optimum duration is around 40-45 minutes. That’s why most lessons and lectures in school are structured around this optimum time. Each period for a lesson is about 40-45 minutes. After which the lecturer or teacher will give the student about 5 – 10 minutes break before continuing. You should also plan your study schedule according to the optimum studying duration. Focus and study for around 40-45 minutes and then take a 5- 10 minutes break for your brain and eyes to rest and refresh before continuing. Doing that will make sure that when you are studying, you are really learning and not spending your time staring blanking into your notes or books.

Second tip, know which subject to study first. I am sure most of you have many subjects to study. You have Languages, Sciences and humanities etc. So which one do you start first? Well I would advise you all to start with the subject you have the least interest first. In that way, you are fresh when you first start and that energy can help you go through that least interested subject with focus and concentration. Subsequently, move on to the subject that you have the most interest. And by the time you are at your most interested subject, you will be tired from all that studying. But fortunately, you are at your most interested subject and your interest in that subject will spur you to focus and study it.

Tip 3, study in the morning or night. There are researches which show that some person work more effectively during the night than during the day. So find out if you are a morning or night person. See if you can understand and absorb more effectively during the day or night. If you are a morning person, wake up a bit earlier to start studying and if you are a night person, well stay up a bit later to study. Also you can do the intense studying during your effective study time. While spending the less effective study time doing intense work like organizing your notes etc.

So above are the 3 tips to study smart and not hard. So while you are burying yourself in those notes and books, think of these 3 tips and see if you can apply them and study smarter and not harder.

Physics tuition – Making physics simple

Many of my students in my physics tuition classes find physics one of the most difficult subjects to learn. More often than not, the reason that they find the subject difficult is because there are a lot of laws and concepts to learn and grasp. Similarly for math, most students find that there are too many formulas and too confusing to learn. So here in this article, I will share one strategy that I teach my students on how to make a daunting task simpler to handle.

This strategy is very simple. The gist of this technique is to break up the problem or task in to smaller problems or task. This will make the initial problem at hand look simpler and less daunting to tackle. For example, if I were to ask you to clean your room, it will seem to be a very huge task and you will mentally feel that it’s going to be very difficult to do. This thought will actually limit you from trying to clean up the room. However, if I were to ask you to pack your table, this will seems like a smaller task which you feel that you can handle. As such, you will most probably go and pack your table. Similarly if I ask you to make your bed, pack your wardrobe, all these smaller task will seems simple enough to do and very likely you will do them. If you notice, by the time you finish all those small tasks, you would have completed cleaning up your room!

Applying the same logic to Physics, if you look at Physics as a whole, it’s going to be very intimidating. Lots of different topics with many different concepts and it sure look tough to learn and master them. This fear is one of the main reasons why students do not want to even start studying and learning physics. This fear will worsen if the student fails to catch up with what the teacher is teaching. Now, if you break up Physics and attack them one at a time, it’s going to be less daunting. You may be surprised that you actually know a lot more physics then you thought you knew.

For example, in ‘O’ level Physics, the topics can be divided in different smaller topics such as Newtonian Mechanics, Waves and Oscillations, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism and Modern Physics. You can start by mastering each of the smaller topics and eventually go on to mastering ‘O’ level Physics. Hopefully this technique I share with you here in my physics tuition blog can help you to see that ‘O’ level Physics is actually not as difficult and tough as it seems.
